      Abstract
Purpose – This poem aims to present a reflection on the antecedents to third world poverty, degradation and hopelessness.

Design/methodology/approach – The design is that of a fictional poem.

Findings – The poet considers how the antecedents to Third World poverty, degradation and hopelessness, unfortunately, mesh together quite seamlessly.

Originality/value – The paper represents a unique attempt to condense, in a nutshell, what is happening in many Third World countries.
