Although there has been a surge in computer games research in recent years, studies of gamers' experience of different game genres are very few. Furthermore, even these few studies of gamers' experience are almost all based on Western/European players. In this paper we present a survey of Japanese gamers' ratings of the importance of a range of elements that contribute to their experience of playing games from different genres. The results of this survey indicate that the ratings of these elements are different across various genres; thus providing designers of each genre with a range of elements that they need to take into account when designing those specific types of games. The results also show that there are small, but significant, differences between males and females in their ratings of some game elements.en_NZ
