It is based on research with seven Year 7–8 teachers who were observed teaching a group of students a rule for divisibility by nine. As part of the lesson, students were shown a way of proving why the divisibility rule for nine works, using materials grouped in tens and hundreds. After the lesson, students’ understanding of multiplication and division was considerably deepened. en_NZ dc.format.mimetype application/pdf dc.language.iso en en_NZ dc.publisher The Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers Inc. en_NZ dc.relation.uri http://www.aamt.edu.au/Webshop/Middle-years/Australian-Mathematics-Teacher/%28language%29/eng-AU en_NZ dc.rights © 2012 The Australian Mathematics Teacher en_NZ dc.subject education en_NZ dc.subject math en_NZ dc.subject multiplication en_NZ dc.subject division en_NZ dc.title Deepening students' understanding of multiplication and division by exploring divisibility by nine en_NZ dc.type Journal Article en_NZ dc.relation.isPartOf Australian Mathematics Teacher en_NZ pubs.begin-page 15 en_NZ pubs.elements-id 38182 pubs.end-page 20 en_NZ pubs.issue 3 en_NZ pubs.volume 68 en_NZ
